Mrs. Torre's 1st Grade class learned about the Butterfly Life Cycle by classroom study and project-based learning experience in art by creating symmetrical butterfly puppets and their chrysalis and leaves.
Mrs. Corlew's 1st Grade class learned about Christopher Columbus and his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on his 3 ships in discovery of America through classroom study, music, museum field trip to see ships, and project-based learning in art by creating 3 miniature ships with sails.
Ms. Nies's 5th Grade class learned about Las Dias de Los Muertos, "Day of the Dead" through classroom study of Latin American culture and Biology: Human Anatomy. Scholars participated in project-based learning in art by sculpting clay, human skulls and decorated them in inspiration of Latin American culture.
Mrs. Simon's Multi-age class learned about Geography and the 7 Continents by classroom study and project-based learning in art through small group sculpting of clay continents and painting using topographical maps.
TOAST ENL students in grades 4-6 learned about Scientific Illustration through their own project-based learning through TOAST teacher collaboration: NYS Museum Field Trip to have curated tour of the world-wide Scientific Illustration exhibition, Science Lab. study, ENL writing, project-based learning in art through learning various observational drawing techniques using different art media, and research of labeling parts of a scientific illustration using technology.
Ms. Shoop's 5th grade class learned about Fall leaves by illustrating leaves in a balanced composition with details and veins, coloring them through observations using oil pastels, and painting sky showing the movement of wind.
TOAST's 3rd Grade classes (Mrs. La, Ms. Tanenhaus, Mrs. Person) learned about Black History in America through study of the story of Henry Box Brown and by project-based learning in art by illustrating a caption in the story about "slave children were like falling leaves" symbolizing them being taken away from their families. The illustrations were of Fall trees drawn with real leaves falling.
